Privacy Policy

EV Range Tracker ("we", "us", "our") lets you record real-world test journeys for your electric vehicle and compare the result against its official WLTP range. This policy explains what personal data we collect through the website and Android app, why, and what rights you have over it.

Account information — your email address, a securely hashed password (we never store your actual password), and an optional display name.

Vehicle information — registration plate, make, model, year, colour, fuel type, and (for EVs) the WLTP range and kerb weight used for scoring. If you look up a UK or Dutch registration plate, we send it to the relevant government vehicle registry to fetch these details. You may also upload a photo of your vehicle.

Journey information — when you record a test journey, we store the start and end odometer reading, battery percentage, timestamps, any notes you add, and, if you use live GPS tracking, the route itself as a series of location points. We also look up the outside temperature and elevation for your route to calculate your Performance Score.

Dashboard photos — if you photograph your car's dashboard to auto-fill odometer/battery readings, that photo is sent to an image-recognition service to read the values off it; it is not permanently stored on our servers afterward.

Technical and error data — if the app or website encounters an error, a crash report (which can include device information and, occasionally, an IP address) is sent to our own self-hosted error-tracking system so we can fix the problem.

We use your information to provide the service you've signed up for: creating and managing your account, storing your vehicles and journeys, calculating your WLTP Performance Score, and keeping the app working reliably. This processing is necessary to perform the contract between you and us when you create an account — we don't use your data for advertising, and we don't sell it to anyone.

We share the minimum necessary data with the following services in order to provide the app's features:

• DVLA / RDW (UK and Dutch government vehicle registries) — to look up your vehicle's details from its registration plate.
• Google Cloud Vision — to read odometer/battery values from a dashboard photo you choose to upload.
• Visual Crossing — to look up historical weather for your journey's time and location.
• Open-Meteo / Open-Elevation — to look up elevation data along your route.
• Resend — to send account verification and password reset emails, if you request one.

Some of these services are based outside the UK/EU (primarily the United States). Where that's the case, they operate under their own data protection agreements (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) that require them to protect your data to a comparable standard.

Our error-tracking system is self-hosted on our own infrastructure — it is not a third party and your data never leaves our servers through it.

We keep your account, vehicle, and journey data for as long as your account is active, so you can review your history at any time. If you delete your account (see below), your vehicles and journeys are permanently and immediately deleted along with it. Crash/error reports are kept for a limited period purely for debugging and aren't linked back to your identity once your account is removed.

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

• Access and portability — download a complete copy of your data at any time from Preferences → Export my data.
• Erasure — permanently delete your account and everything in it from Preferences → Delete my account. This takes effect immediately and can't be undone.
• Rectification — correct any inaccurate vehicle or journey details directly in the app or portal at any time.
• Object or restrict — contact us if you want us to stop or limit a particular use of your data.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can also complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

EV Range Tracker isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16.

We only use strictly necessary cookies/local storage needed to keep you signed in — nothing for advertising or analytics tracking. Because of this, we don't need to show you a cookie consent banner.

All traffic to our website and app is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Passwords are hashed, never stored in plain text. Administrative access to user data is logged and audited internally.

If we make a significant change to how we handle your data, we'll update the date at the top of this page. We encourage you to check back occasionally.
